Halloween

I don’t get many trick-or-treaters out here to the farm.  Never have had many of them, we live so far out in the boonies, and our driveway is a very long distance from the road.  So I don’t bother laying in a stock of Halloween candy for trick-or-treaters.  I just lay in a stockpile of quarters and if anyone shows up I’ll give them a couple of quarters.  I figure that when I was a kid I would have much prefered money to candy anyway!  Parents don’t have to worry about kids getting too much of a sugar high from quarters, either!  I figure it’s the perfect “treat.”

Comments

I was surprised when I logged into my blog today to see that I had 118 spam comments waiting for me to approve or mark as spam.  I don’t really understand why I am getting so many spam comments, and why those folks are thinking that their comments will get approved – their comments aren’t even relevant to the posts they are commenting on!  What a crazy world we live in!  Well folks, comments are moderated, and are not approved if they are not relevant to the post.  Sorry to rain on your parade!

Water heater blanket

I was surprised to notice when I went into the basement this morning that my water heater does not have an insulated blanket over it!  Seems to me that I put one on it a couple of years ago.  Last year I had some maintenance work done on my furnace and water heater; I have a contract with my propane company to do an annual check up.  I think that the maintenance man might have removed the water heater blanket when he was checking out the water heater.  I wonder why he didn’t put it back on; maybe he ruined it when he removed it.  He should have at least told me about it!  I am guessing he didn’t tell me about it because he was afraid he would have to pay out of pocket to replace it.  Oh well, regardless, I am going to have to go buy a new one this week!

Mending fences

Today I spent all day mending fences – literally.  Last night a drunk driver ran off the road and through a large section of my fence.  Thankfully the police notified me that the fence was broken before I let the cattle out into that pasture.  I would have been really upset to have to try to herd the wayward cattle back after they had escaped!  So today I had to spend most of the day mending fences.  The worst part about it was the memories it brought back about how my parents were killed by a drunk driver.  I think that all cars should be equipped with a breathalyzer box and the car refuse to start if the driver has had too much to drink!

Snow making at Yellowstone Park

I was really surprised to read today on the LATimes website that Yellowstone Park is going to be using snow machines to make snow in the park this winter.  I guess I never thought about why in the world a National Park would even think about doing something like that?  Seems to me that the Park is supposed to be all about nature, and if it snows then fine, if it doesn’t snow, well that’s fine too!  But the article was talking about how making snow in the park would allow snow coaches and snowmobiles to use the park in the winter.  To be honest, I’m not so sure that is a great idea or not!  I don’t have anything against snow coaches or snowmobiles, its’ just something I never really thought about in the context of them being in Yellowstone!  What do YOU think?  I’d like your opinion!
